Episode 6: Cool!

I've named this episode of the podcast "Cool" because I used the word cool waaay too many times!  I apologize in advance :0)  As always I have some magazine reviews, plus I talk about a few yarns I recently got, a strange yet amusing knitting video, Vanna's Choice Yarn Contest, and we will be wrapping up the very first Mystery Knitting Project!

Magazines/Bookazines:
Knitting - November 2009, Issue #69
Verena - Fall 2009
Knitter's - Fall 2009
Knit by Jo Sharp - Issue #2
Filati Handknitting by Lana Grossa - Fall/Winter 2009 Issue #38

Yarn:
Marvelous Mohair from Steadfast Fibers (I've learned that they have actually gone out of business.  So stock up while this yarn is still floating around out there!)
Mongolian Cashmere from Jade Sapphire and Cashmere Silk
Araucania Ruca Multi I highly recommend this super yummy yarn!

Finally, the first Mystery Knitting Project is on the final rows!  I will wait a few days to post a picture of the finished item, to give you all a chance to get the last few rows done.

Color B
Row 43 (RS): Knit
Row 44 (WS): Knit

Color A
Row 45 (RS): Knit
Row 46 (WS): K2, P to last 2 stitches, K2
Row 47 (RS): K1, Knit through front and back of next stitch, knit to end (you should now have 42 stitches)
Row 48 (WS): K2, Purl to last two stitches, K2

The next 12 rows you will be using both colors in each row.  To change colors, simply drop the working yarn, pick up and begin knitting with the other color.  Be sure to carry the non-working yarn loosely until you are ready to use it again.  If the yarn is carried too tightly, the fabric will pucker.

Bind off using color A.  Weave in all ends.  Voila!  This makes a handy pad to place on your counter or table to protect it from the heat of a dish straight from the oven.  If you look at the fabric from an angle, you can see the heart that kind of jumps out.  That's called shadow knitting.   Neat, huh?  I made every attempt to post an accurate pattern.  However, being human, there is the chance that I made an error at some point.  If you run into problems, just leave a comment here on the blog or drop me an email at sapphiresnpurls@gmail.com

Vanna's Choice Yarn Contest
I am definitely going to be entering!  I haven't decided which category I want to enter, or what I want to make.  But I think this is a great contest.  Top prize is $1,000 and meet Vanna.  Check out the site for more details.  Vanna's Choice

Well that wraps it up for this episode.  Again, I apologize for saying cool so frequently.  I'll work on that next episode, I promise I won't say cool even once!  Please come back in a couple of weeks for the next episode when I will have more magazine reviews, talk about how things are going with the Girl's Night in Knit Along, and more bits of knitting goodness.  Until then, thanks for listening and Happy Knitting!

  1. I have finished the mystery project! It was fun. You weren't kidding when you said to stitch those last rows loosely. I thought I was, but not quite loose enough... Oh well. I have never knitted anything like this and it was fun. :) Thanks!

  2. I'm so glad you enjoyed the project! I had a few tight spots in my last few rows as well, I usually do when working with more than one color. But all in all I am happy with my little hot pad and that's all that matters :0)
